           Your body is an incredible system constantly working to keep you alive, adapting to environmental pressures and stress, and extracting nutrients from the food you give it, even when that food is low quality. At the center of all this is your metabolism. Metabolism is simply the term for all the processes in your body that keep you alive: digestion, nutrient transport, healing, and repair.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your body is always doing two things:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           1. Maintaining Homeostasis
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Homeostasis is your body’s effort to keep things the same. Contrary to how it might feel, your body doesn’t want to gain fat easily. It’s always trying to stay at a healthy level. At the same time, you don't want to lose fat either because fat is an energy reserve in case you stop eating or face a famine.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           2. Adapting to Food and Stress
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Your body constantly adapts to the food you eat and the environmental stress you experience. It can become more or less efficient with its metabolic processes depending on these factors.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This is where the idea of fast and slow metabolisms comes in. A fast metabolism is inefficient; it takes what it needs and discards the rest. A slow metabolism is efficient; it extracts every nutrient from every bit of food you give it.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           To understand this, imagine yourself 1,000 years ago hiking across a desert. You’re rationing food, under stress, and not eating frequently. Your body responds by becoming more efficient: it extracts every nutrient and stores what it can in case food and water run out.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Then you reach an oasis. You relax, eat and drink frequently, and the stress disappears. Your body shifts to processing food inefficiently; it takes only what it needs to stay alive and passes the rest through.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What This Means Today
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As a modern person, you need to think about food not just in terms of quantity, but also type and timing. If you eat irregularly skipping breakfast, having a big lunch, or saving calories for a BBQ or birthday party your body doesn’t know when the next calories are coming. Combine that with high stress (which most people experience), and your body switches to an efficient metabolism. It starts processing and storing every calorie.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This becomes a problem in today’s world, where it’s easy to consume a lot of calories quickly. If you skip meals and then eat at a party, you might take in three days’ worth of food in one sitting. That makes it easy to gain fat, even though physiologically, it should be hard.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           The Simple Fix
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Eat regularly. Eat the same types of food at roughly the same times each day. If you’re going to eat more say, at a party don’t skip meals beforehand. Just eat the extra food and then return to your regular eating pattern the next day.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your body will recognize the excess and process it through. But if you try to save calories, binge in one meal, and then starve the next day, your body will respond by holding onto as many calories as it can.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Your life is relatively short, around 80 years, and while physical decline is part of aging, your life is never truly over. Many people reach their 30s or 40s and assume they are past their prime. They accept pain and physical limitations as normal. But the reality is that you still have decades ahead, and how you live those years depends on how you care for your body.

           So What Does a Strength Session Look Like?

           Keep it simple, choose one exercise per group of muscles/joints in your body.

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Legs
           &#xD;

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Front (think chest, shoulders etc)

           Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that provides the body with energy. Sugar occurs naturally in many foods and can also be added during cooking to enhance flavor. While it’s an essential energy source, overconsumption can lead to health risks, meaning understanding is required when approaching how to add it into your diet. However there is a huge amount of conflicting information and fear mongering around sugar and artificial sweeteners so I thought I would lay it all out in hopefully a plain easy to understand manner.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Types of Sugar and Their Sources
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Here’s a breakdown of different types of sugar and where they are found:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Monosaccharides (Simple Sugars):
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Glucose

           &#xD;

            Sucrose
           &#xD;

           This simply breaks all sugar down into one of 2 categories.

            Natural Sugars:

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           BMR makes up the majority of your daily calorie burn, usually around 60-70% of your total. And it's directly linked to how much muscle you have. More muscle means a higher BMR, which means you burn more calories even at rest. This is one of the biggest reasons strength training matters so much for long-term weight management.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           People who are naturally lean often have high NEAT without even realising it. They move more in general. Small habits like taking the stairs, parking further away, or going for a short walk after lunch can make a meaningful difference over weeks and months.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Exercise (EAT)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           This is your intentional training. Running, gym sessions, classes, sport. It's the one most people focus on, but for the average person it makes up a smaller portion of total daily calorie burn than they expect.

But you can't out-train a bad diet, and exercise alone rarely drives significant fat loss without the rest of your energy balance being right.

           Calories in versus calories out is the foundation, but what those calories are made of matters too.

      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Protein, carbohydrates, and fat are all metabolised differently. Protein in particular requires more energy to digest and process than the other two. This is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). Eating a high-protein diet means your body is burning more calories just processing what you ate, which gives your metabolism a small but real boost.

           The way you grew up has a bigger impact on your health than most people realise. What you ate as a kid, how you moved, and what felt normal in your household is still influencing your choices today.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           If your family didn't have much money, food was probably about quantity over quality. Big portions, lots of carbs, fast food as a treat. If not, building that habit from scratch as an adult is harder, though absolutely not impossible.

           The biggest mistake people make is choosing a diet or training plan that feels completely foreign to how they've always lived. A low-carb diet is brutal if you've eaten rice and potatoes your whole life. Early morning workouts are a nightmare if you've never been a morning person.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           The fix isn't to overhaul your entire identity. It's to find better versions of what you already do. Swap fried chicken for baked. Drop the amount of sauce you use. Keep breakfast but change what's in it. Small shifts that work with your habits, not against them, are what stick long term.

           This is the one most people don't want to hear. Whatever you do to lose weight, get fitter, or feel better, you have to keep doing it. That's not a punishment, that's just how it works.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Pick keto, paleo, Mediterranean, vegan, intermittent fasting, whatever works for you. But understand that the moment you stop, the results stop too. This is why 12-week challenges rarely lead to lasting change. Twelve weeks is only a quarter of the year. You've still got 40 weeks left to undo the work.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The answer isn't to find a perfect plan. It's to find a sustainable one.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

A better move is keeping breakfast but making it work for your goals.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Find the version of healthy that fits your actual life, then do it consistently. That's it.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Principle Three: Aim for Minimum Effective Dose, Not Perfection
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           This one sounds counterintuitive. Don't we all want to aim for the best possible outcome? Yes, but the goal here is long-term consistency, not short-term intensity. And those two things are often enemies.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           If the minimum needed to get stronger is training once every 7-10 days, then starting with one session a week is a win. You can always add more later. But if you start with five sessions a week and then life gets in the way and you drop to two, you'll feel like you're failing even though two sessions is still great. That feeling of failure is what makes people quit.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Start small. Build the habit. Add volume later.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The same thinking applies to food. The perfect option isn't always available. A healthy home-cooked lunch is great, but if you forgot to prep it and you're starving, what's your next best option? Having a plan for that moment is what separates people who stay on track from people who blow the whole day on a bad decision.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Maybe the best available option is a steak pie from the bakery because you know roughly what's in it. That's fine. That's the next best option doing its job. It beats using McDonald's as an all-you-can-eat buffet.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           The 90% Rule
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           One last thing. I actively encourage people to take 1-2 meals per week off their nutrition plan. Not a binge, just something you enjoy that isn't part of the plan.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           If you eat 3 meals a day, that's 21 meals a week. Having 1-2 off-plan meals and still nailing the other 19 is a 90% success rate. You will absolutely still make progress at 90%. No one ever got fat from a single meal. Perfection isn't the goal. Consistency is.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
